They don’t worry

There are people, they don’t worry about the things I’m very anxious about.

Actually, you know, they are most of the people I know. Unfortunately, these days, quite many people of my surrounding … well, how to place it, they are not too intelligent. I mean, they are not stupid. Some of them actually very smart.

Yet, they never worry over the things I worry about.

But most of them, they aren’t overthinking things. Sometimes it feels like they are stupid. But not stupid in general, rather in the things I worry about. I understand these things, and I’m solicitous about them. They are not. They mostly don’t care.

Upon interacting with these people, I’m realising that what if I’m being overly focused on these things? This effect lasts not too long though.

Interactions with such a person make this only worse. It reassures me that I’m on the right track. And while I believe I am, my point is, there are things I’m overly worried about. To the point of being obsessed with some things.

I was creating a set of personal servers (for web development and some automation) in different locations. To compensate electricity blackouts, plus as a matter of learning distributed infrastructure. One of the locations at my mother-in-law’s (that woman from a paragraph above) mansion. They have plenty of space for me to have not just a computer, but a whole rack unit.

Heck, I could have a full-blown data center in that space.

Yet, of course, she doesn’t allow that. She doesn’t allow a single-board computer. Just because she’s a stupid self-centred person. She does not care whether I need it or not, unless she’s something to gain. Obviously.

I had a few very power hungry server units there, hidden. They were working years for 24/7, and she never cared. She wastes energy, never worrying about that. Her TV, of course it works mostly 24/7. She was driving a jeep for decades, and her husband bought her an electric BMW just a year or two ago. If she cares about that jeep, that’s only about the money she’d spend on gas. Ecology is rather nonexistent for her.

Taking a five minutes bike ride to a nearby shop? Ha. Ha. Ha. Well, of course, she’d brag about that to everyone. ‘Oh, it would be so cool to get that bike ride, yeah, I’m getting a bit fat’ she’d say. As if she wasn’t non-muscular fat and not beautiful and rather ugly woman. For decades. It’s a pretty sad story, I think.

Of course she’d go by car to that nearby shop. Even if there’s one bottle of milk to buy. I could have a kilowatt-hour server there, and she’d never blink an eye, if she’d used it for something trivial. Since she pays all her checks with her husband’s money, she mostly don’t even look at these numbers. There’s no attempt to lower them, why would she?

Technically, I could have a free set of servers, paid by her (husband). I don’t like it too much, but I don’t say about the servers only because she’s fucking too stupid to care. She’d invent million of reasons why I cannot have a tiny 1W/hr Orange Pi Zero. That’s actually the real situation. She noticed one being connected and told me I should not leave it. So I did all the servers in the hidden.

However, I do care about power consumption. Not because of the bills, rather power consumption. And being reasonable. There’s no point to run a full-blown server for a simple personal web server. But for me, even a laptop is overkill, and isn’t reasonable while compared to an SBC. So I switched all my servers to SBCs.

There are many things I care about. That was just the simplest shortest example of an obviously stupid person who never cares about ecology. This only reassures me, you want to think about ecology.

However, there are less obvious examples.

E.g. vendor lock-in and planned obsolescence.
